The announcement by NSW Lands that they will be calling tenders later this year for the design, construction and maintenance (5 years) of the wave attenuator in Snug Cove at the Community Liaison Meeting on Wednesday is a welcome sign that this project is getting underway, President of POEM, Fritz Drenkhahn said today.

“POEM members warmly welcome the announcement by the Premier of NSW the Hon Mike
Baird MP and the Member for Bega and NSW Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the
Hon Andrew Constance, MP that the NSW Government has allocated an additional $29
million for the Snug Cove wharf extension project.

The strong support provided by the Commonwealth Government and the Bega Valley Shire
Council have also been vital to this landmark infrastructure project.

This will make a total of $44 million, comprising the State ($32 million), Commonwealth
($10 million) and Bega Valley Shire Council ($2 million). This is a massive injection of funds
into Eden and the south east region and should provide the basis for a major expansion of
cruise ship activity, local business and substantial, related growth of regional tourism”, the
President of POEM, Fritz Drenkhahn said today.

“lt is fantastic to see the support that Eden is getting from the governments involved. Much
of the credit must go to the local people who have been dedicated to this project for years.

The Cruise Eden group and people such as Gale Ward and Jenny Robb are to be thanked and
congratulated. They are certainly entitled to celebrate.”

“The next step in the overall port development is an attenuator for a commercial marina in
a Snug Cove safe harbour. This will bring year round jobs, investment and additional
tourism – the economic stimulus that Eden clearly needs.”

assist in achieving this next goal for Eden and the region.”

Snug Cove Marina Economic Indicators – Details and Sources

• Initial private investment including design, approvals, project management and contract supervision and 15% contingency $8.4 million. International Marina Consultants
• Direct and Indirect marina employment generated by the marina; 23 people- GHD consultants
• Marina occupancy rising from 40% to 90% over ten years- International Marina Consultants
• Total annual turnover when fully developed: $2.2 million-International Marina Consultants
• Annual net profit after cost of capital at 8%, before tax and depreciation: $900,000-International Marina Consultants
• Annual lease payments to the NSW Government of about $130,000-International Marina Consultants
• Annual expenditure by the marina operator, largely in Eden, on goods and services of about $500,000-International Marina Consultants
• Substantial expenditure by owners, skippers and crew of the several hundred visiting and permanent vessels occupying the marina over the course of a year
• Real estate investment in Snug Cove: $100 million over 10 years (probably commencing with about $40m in stages on the BP site)-Bega Valley commercial builder.
• A major boost to the slipway and to other existing and potential Snug Cove and town businesses.

The issue is the design and location of the attenuator

Based on professional advice, the POEM proposal for a 160m Berthing Pocket and Fixed Panel attenuator provides ample space for Cruise Ships and maximum all-weather protection for Snug Cove, delivering a safe anchorage, practical access and maximum marina capacity.

The Crown Lands proposal using a floating attenuator would not achieve a safe harbour, will significantly reduce marina potential and restrict access.

There is confusion between the Cattle Bay Marina proposal and the Snug Cove – Safe Harbour project. They are two completely separate projects;
The Cattle Bay Project is a Private Development (as is the Boydtown Marina Project), whereas the Snug Cove Project is a Government funded / Community project.
